Tom and Jerry's first short film was released in 1940 around three years after Pepys had started producing games. Between 1940 and 1958 Tom and Jerry films won seven Oscars for "Best Animated Short Film" the same number won by Disney's Silly Symphonies. By 1972 both Pepys' and Tom & Jerry's output was increasingly aimed at a more juvenile market. Tom and Jerry's older films were still enormously popular and Tom and Jerry Annuals were issued throughout the 1970s.
In the 1970s Tom and Jerry cartoons from their Golden Age were still being screened regularly by the BBC. They were normally shown in a slot shortly before the 6 O'Clock News.
They were also used to fill gaps in programming, if a live broadcast under-ran for example.
They were ideal for this purpose as nobody, young or old, was likely to want to change channels, everybody loved a classic Tom and Jerry. I remember looking forward to gaps in the schedule hoping that the unexpected treat of a Tom and Jerry would be announced just moments before it was shown.
