Ten Plus One: The 15 Editions of Pepys' Speed

How many editions of Pepys' Speed card game are there?

Ten irregularly numbered editions of Pepys' Speed were joined by a new edition in 1988 from Gibsons Games, who took over the Pepys brand in 1984. So there are 11 different editions of the game and they are sequentially, but oddly, numbered between 1 and 15.

Quite why there never was a recognisable 4th, 9th, 11th or 13th edition has never been officially explained. Should you ever see one of these (probably non-existent) editions advertised for sale on eBay the chances are the ad is designed to deceive but it just might be that you are looking at an elusive edition that has never been documented before. You can use this guide to check you aren't being duped before you purchase!

The very first edition of Speed was published as a cheap game, printed in just two colours and selling for 1 Shilling in 1938. In 1945 the same cards were reprinted in full colour and thereafter every few years a new edition was published, updated with new images.

1948's 3rd Edition was the first to feature the "Speedbird" on the card backs. In the 5th Edition Speedway Stars were added to the game. The 6th included Athletes, the 7th Motor-Cyclists and from the 8th to the 12th Animals featured. The Gibson's 1988 version was not numbered but has come to be known as the "15th Edition" and involved a radical redesign of the cards but not the gameplay.

Speed is one of the most enjoyable games ever issued by Pepys and is also one of the most collectable. We keep a couple of well used packs just for family games and the rest of the collection is put out of harm's way.
