Pepys published this game under licence from Jaques.

Jaques first published the game in 1866 the illustrator was John Tenniel and the box's orange and black design of the early 20th Century was by Irene Dodson, see Jaques' Original Happy Families.

The Jaques versions started with 64 cards depicting 16 characters (the game could be bought in 2 half packs with 8 characters in each). The 5 characters not to feature in the later 11 character Jaques and Pepys packs were: “Rocks Ahead” a Sailor with a drooping telescope, “Look out! the police are coming.” a man with coffered hair turning away, “Death or Victory.” a gladiator with shield and sword, “My heart’s in the Highlands! a Scotsman with a rifle and “Another gash! oh, my poor chin.” a man shaving in a mirror.

You can see images of all the cards from earlier packs at World of Playing Cards.

Pepys sold the game with two different title cards on otherwise identical boxes with the same contents. I am not sure if these were published together or at different times.

I have also found another box with no title card, just the design printed directly on the box, no blank cards included and a double vent to the top.

This looks quite a bit later to me.

The vented box also has a short, squared top flap.

Jaques Original Snap - Gibsons Editions

When Gibsons took over the Pepys brand they continued to publish Pepys' Jaques Original Snap, differently boxed, as they had Jaques Original Happy Families but it isn't currently available to buy new from Gibsons. To see the packaging of the Gibsons version click on the box.

Jaques themselves do still publish their own game and Snap is available from their shop.
